The AMDGPU LLVM backend refuses to lower system-scope atomicrmw to its native single-instruction atomics (global_atomic_xor, flat_atomic_add_f32, ...) and falls back to a flat_atomic_cmpswap retry loop, because system scope demands mid-kernel coherence with the host CPU. Under high contention that CAS loop livelocks for non-converging ops like xor — test_reduction_single_i32[arch=amdgpu-5] hangs indefinitely on ~1M atomic_xor's into the same address.

Quadrants kernels never need mid-kernel host-CPU visibility (the host only reads results after kernel completion, which forces a full cache flush anyway), so the largest scope we ever need is agent. Setting it explicitly on AMDGPU lets the backend emit the native atomics. CPU and CUDA already single-instruction-lower seq_cst atomics at system scope, so they keep the LLVM default; SPIR-V already spells Device scope explicitly. Internal runtime atomics that touch pinned host memory (adstack overflow flag) are intentionally left at system scope.

The fast-reduction path on AMDGPU (`optimized_reduction` in `codegen_amdgpu.cpp`) routes through runtime-bitcode helpers
like `reduce_add_f32`, which call `atomic_add_f32`. The runtime bitcode ships with C++ CAS-loop bodies for those
helpers, but `QuadrantsLLVMContext::module_from_file` rewrites them at module-load time with single `atomicrmw`
instructions so the GPU backend can lower them to native hardware atomics.

That rewrite was using the LLVM default (System) syncscope. On AMDGPU the System-scope `atomicrmw fadd` falls back to a
`flat_atomic_cmpswap` retry loop bracketed by cache-flush instructions, which is the same livelock failure mode that
353b45d fixed for the codegen-side `atomicrmw`. `test_reduction_single_f32[arch=amdgpu-0]` was the visible repro
(hangs indefinitely under contention).

Lift `kernel_atomic_syncscope` out of `codegen_llvm.cpp`'s anonymous namespace into a small shared header so the
codegen path and the runtime-bitcode patcher pick exactly the same scope (`agent` on AMDGPU, System everywhere else).
After this change, the full AMDGPU reduction suite passes single-threaded:

    16 passed, 4492 deselected, 2 warnings in 31.99s

and the combined `-k 'reduction or atomic'` sweep is also green:

    106 passed, 7 skipped, 4395 deselected in 142.11s

CUDA and CPU paths are unchanged (they continue to use System scope, which they lower correctly).

### Atomic visibility scope across backends

Every `qd.atomic_*` is emitted at **device-wide scope**: visible to all threads on the GPU executing the kernel, but not required to be coherent with the host CPU mid-kernel. The host only observes results once the kernel completes, at which point the launcher's stream-sync flushes everything regardless. Choosing device scope (rather than the strongest "system" scope) lets every backend lower the op to a single hardware atomic instruction instead of a software CAS retry loop, which matters for correctness as much as for speed: under heavy contention, a CAS loop on a non-converging op like `atomic_xor` can livelock.

Not sure that

CPU and CUDA lower system-scope atomics directly to a single hardware instruction, so they leave the LLVM default alone. AMDGPU's LLVM backend, in contrast, refuses to use its native single-instruction atomics at system scope (it would have to add cache-flush instructions that don't exist for that op), and silently falls back to a CAS loop; setting `syncscope("agent")` is what unlocks the native `flat_atomic_xor` / `global_atomic_xor`. SPIR-V backends spell the same idea with the `Device` scope token. The user-visible semantics are identical across all four.

Similarly, this seems a bit too low-level for the end-user. Clarifying that setting syncscope("agent") is essentially to unlocks the native flat_atomic_xor / global_atomic_xor is great typically, but

I think we've agreed that @alanray-tech will review these docs? Let's leave such decisions to him, since he is ultimately the end-user of these docs, at least in the short-term. And in the medium to long-term, I feel he is a reasonable representative of other users.

I prefer to keep the details, from my side it's good to have some "evidence&reason" to support the design decision, which makes it more logical and trustworthy.

Nit / follow-up: AtomicOpType::min and AtomicOpType::max for f32/f64 are not covered by this switch — they fall through to default: break; and land in the call("atomic_min_f32", ...) path below (lines 1366–1373), which dispatches to the runtime-bitcode CAS loops in runtime_module/atomic.h (DEFINE_ATOMIC_OP_COMP_EXCH). Those CAS loops compile __atomic_compare_exchange(..., seq_cst, seq_cst) to a system-scope cmpxchg — the same scope this PR fixes everywhere else. On AMDGPU the per-iteration cache flushes still apply to those CAS loops.

Easy to fix in a follow-up — add two cases to this switch, mirroring the FAdd case:

Why this is safe / sources:

  • AtomicRMWInst::FMin/FMax landed in LLVM 15 via D127041 (commit 1023ddaf, Jul 6 2022; branch release/15.x cut Jul 26 2022). Confirmed in the LLVM 15.0.0 release notes, "Changes to the LLVM IR" section. CI uses ROCm 6.4 (.github/workflows/test_gpu.yml:199), which is based on LLVM 19.0.0.

  • GFX10+ (RDNA1) has native global_atomic_fmin/global_atomic_fmax for f32 — support was added to the LLVM AMDGPU backend in commit e381833. GFX9 (Vega) does not have native f32 fmin/fmax (only gfx90a/gfx940 got f64 versions; see PR #95592 for the full per-generation breakdown). On GFX9 LLVM will still expand to a CAS loop, but the cmpxchg inside that loop now uses agent scope, avoiding the per-iteration cache-flush overhead.

  • Bonus: atomicrmw fmin/fmax match llvm.minnum/llvm.maxnum semantics (IEEE 754-2008 minNum/maxNum — see D127041 review discussion and LLVM 15 LangRef). This aligns f32/f64 with the f16 path which already uses CreateMinNum/CreateMaxNum (codegen_llvm.cpp:1342–1346), fixing the NaN inconsistency the docs note (current f32/f64 runtime CAS uses b > a ? a : b which returns NaN when one input is NaN, while minNum returns the non-NaN value).

The call("atomic_min_f32", ...) block below and the corresponding DEFINE_ATOMIC_OP_COMP_EXCH(min, f32) / (max, f32) / (min, f64) / (max, f64) entries in atomic.h become dead code and can be removed.

Codegen `real_type_atomic` routed `f32`/`f64` `atomic_min`/`atomic_max` through runtime
`atomic.h` CAS loops; those still used system-scope cmpxchg when inlined. Emit LLVM
`atomicrmw fmin`/`fmax` with `kernel_atomic_syncscope` instead, matching integer atomics.

Extend `llvm_context` runtime-bitcode patching (same helper as atomic add): rewrite
`atomic_min_f*` / `atomic_max_f*` to `atomicrmw` + syncscope so `reduce_min_f32`/etc stay
consistent.

Docs: unify min/max semantics across fp widths; scope table mentions float min/max.
…rrect SPIR-V min/max claim

Two fixes to the per-backend atomic tables in atomics.md:

- The "scope spelling" table used `atomic_xor` as the sole representative op, which was misleading now that we route
  `f32`/`f64` min/max through `atomicrmw fmin/fmax` too. Split the lowering column into one for `atomic_xor` and one
  for float min/max, with honest per-backend cells (PTX has no native float min/max atomic, AMDGPU is GFX-dependent,
  SPIR-V uses CAS payload).
- The min/max NaN table previously said Vulkan/Metal float min/max lowered to SPIR-V `FMin`/`FMax` as the atomic op.
  Reality: `spirv_codegen.cpp` only emits `OpAtomicFAddEXT` natively; min/max goes through a CAS loop with
  GLSL.std.450 `FMin`/`FMax` payload (`spirv_ir_builder.cpp::float_atomic`). Updated to reflect that.
Replaces the half-and-half scope/lowering table with two separate
tables: a compact scope-spelling table and a dedicated "native
instruction vs CAS fallback" matrix that uses ✅ / 🟡 per atomic op,
dtype group (int, f32/f64, f16), and backend. Cells are backed by
empirical `llc` runs on x86_64, NVPTX, and amdgcn (gfx906/gfx90a/
gfx942/gfx1030/gfx1100) at `syncscope("agent")`, plus the existing
SPIR-V codegen path. Footnotes cover the x86 and/or/xor old-value
nuance, AMDGPU's GFX-dependent float lowering (gfx942 is the
production target), and SPIR-V's capability-gated float add.

The amd-integration fork had cherry-picked the HIP graph driver functions
(graph_create / graph_destroy / graph_add_kernel_node / graph_instantiate /
graph_exec_destroy / graph_launch), and upstream v1.0.0 added the same set.
The per-file 3-way merge appended both copies into
amdgpu_driver_functions.inc.h, producing redeclaration errors that broke the
AMDGPU RHI/runtime compile. Drop the upstream duplicate block; the signatures
are identical to the fork's existing declarations.

- kernel_launcher.cpp: the 3-way merge spliced upstream v1.0.0's launch_llvm_kernel
  rewrite (ephemeral arg/context buffers, explicit-stream path, AmdgpuDefaultStream
  PinGuard) onto the AMD fork's kernarg-by-value + persistent-scratch design,
  leaving references to undefined `ephemeral_context_ptr`. Restore the fork's
  coherent launch_llvm_kernel verbatim; it calls the (already merged) enhanced
  launch_offloaded_tasks, which keeps the max-reducer dispatch and stream-parallel
  groups adapted onto the AMD launch path.
- llvm_context.h: both the fork and upstream added `num_instructions`; the merge
  kept upstream's private placement, but the AMDGPU codegen force-inline heuristic
  calls it statically from outside the class. Move it back to the public section.

* Restore async result D2H and hoist kernarg vectors in AMDGPU launcher

The v1.0.0 merge resolution regressed two amd-integration baseline
optimizations in launch_llvm_kernel / launch_offloaded_tasks:

  - The per-launch result-buffer copy was a blocking memcpy_device_to_host,
    forcing a host stall on every value-returning launch and serializing the
    GPU pipeline. Restore the async D2H (the caller synchronizes lazily when it
    needs the value); external-array transfers still stream_synchronize once
    before reading back.

  - launch_task constructed the kernarg std::vectors from initializer lists
    ({kernarg_payload} / {kernarg_size}) on every dispatch (heap alloc + free
    per launch). Hoist arg_ptrs/arg_sizes out of the per-task launch and reuse.

* amdgpu: default to LDS permlane64 emulation; drop host-x86 barrier asm on retarget

Two AMDGPU JIT-compile crashes surfaced after the v1.0.0 merge pulled in the QIPC subgroup
ops (Genesis-Embodied-AI#676), which made the rigid constraint solver's wave-cooperative reductions route through
`amdgpu_cross_half_shuffle_i32`. Both manifested as a SIGSEGV inside
`llvm::SIInstrInfo::getInstSizeInBytes` during `JITSessionAMDGPU::compile_module_to_hsaco`
(i.e. at first kernel launch), and reproduce on gfx942 / MI300X. Baseline 0.4.6 never emitted
these constructs, which is why it was unaffected.

1. Native `llvm.amdgcn.permlane64` lowering crashes the bundled LLVM 22.1.0 AMDGPU backend.
   Default `amdgpu_permlane64` to the existing LDS-roundtrip software emulation on every target
   (it produces identical results). Add `QD_AMDGPU_USE_NATIVE_PERMLANE64=1` to opt back into the
   native instruction once the backend bug is fixed; the old `QD_AMDGPU_FORCE_PERMLANE64_FALLBACK`
   is now the default and still honored. This is the actual crash fix.

2. The runtime module is compiled by the host x86_64 clang and only retargeted to amdgcn here, so
   `amdgpu_cross_half_shuffle_i32`'s `__asm__ volatile("" : "+v"(byte))` optimization barrier carries
   x86 flag clobbers (`~{dirflag},~{fpsr},~{flags}`) that are meaningless on AMDGPU. The IR verifies
   but the empty-body INLINEASM is invalid on the amdgcn target. Neutralize empty-body barrier asm
   during retarget (forward the tied value, then erase) so no stale host asm reaches codegen. On the
   wave64 targets we ship `ds_bpermute` already addresses the full wave, so the hint is a no-op.

clang-tidy (modernize-use-nullptr, -warnings-as-errors) flagged
`builder->CreateSub(0, input)` in the i32 sgn path: the literal `0` binds to
the `llvm::Value*` LHS parameter as a null pointer, not an integer zero.
Replace with `builder->CreateNeg(input)`, which emits `0 - input` with a proper
zero constant -- identical intended semantics, and clang-tidy clean.
