Scope cached non-field plans to kernel specialization
Do not reuse _qd_non_field_plan across all launches without a key: this cache is currently stored per struct instance and then consumed unconditionally, but the active field plan depends on used_py_dataclass_parameters and py_dataclass_basename. If the same frozen dataclass instance is first launched in a context where only qd.Field members are active (empty plan), a later launch that needs ndarray/non-field members will incorrectly skip argument emission (including the kernel.py fast-skip path), producing a wrong launch context. Please key this cache by specialization context (at least used-params/basename) or recompute per call.

python/quadrants/lang/kernel.py:494-496— The new kernel.py launch-loop fast-skip at kernel.py:494 reads the wrong attribute name:_qd_non_field_plan(singular), but_func_base.pyonly ever sets_qd_non_field_plans(plural — a per-instance dict keyed byid(plan)).getattr(val, "_qd_non_field_plan", None)always returns None, theif _nfp is not None and not _nfp:branch is unreachable, and the launch-loop fast-skip is dead code — silently defeating one of the two perf optimizations advertised in the PR description ("avoiding even function-call overhead" for all-Field structs). Note that simply renaming to_qd_non_field_plansis insufficient since that attribute is a dict (truthy whenever any plan has been populated); the fix needs either a per-plan_idlookup or a separate boolean fast-path attribute (e.g._qd_non_field_empty) stored alongside the dict.Extended reasoning...
What the bug is
_func_base.py(lines 637/641 in the merged version) writes/reads the per-instance cache under the plural attribute_qd_non_field_plans— a dict keyed byid(plan)(the per-specialization fix from commit 4a8c552).kernel.py:494, however, reads the singular_qd_non_field_plan:_nfp = getattr(val, "_qd_non_field_plan", None) if _nfp is not None and not _nfp: continue
A grep across the entire repo finds exactly three references to
_qd_non_field*: the two plural reads/writes in_func_base.py, and this one singular read inkernel.py. The singular form is never written anywhere, sogetattralways returnsNone, the predicate_nfp is not None and not _nfpis unreachable, and the fast-skip never fires. How this happened
Commit 4b2c4ad ("Skip _recursive_set_args for all-Field frozen dataclass structs") added the kernel.py probe with the singular attribute name. Commit 4a8c552 ("Key non-field plan cache by specialization to avoid cross-kernel staleness") then renamed the
_func_base.pycache to plural to fix the cross-kernel staleness flagged by reviewers — but did not update the matchingkernel.pyprobe. The two ends of the optimization no longer agree on the attribute name.Step-by-step proof
Take an all-Field frozen dataclass struct (the exact PR target — anymal_uniform_kinematic, two robots, field backend):
- Launch kernel for the first time with struct
s.launch_kernelreaches the new probe at kernel.py:494:_nfp = getattr(s, "_qd_non_field_plan", None)→ returnsNone(the attribute doesn't exist, never has). if _nfp is not None and not _nfp:→ False (because_nfp is None). Fast-skip does not trigger.- Falls through to
self._recursive_set_args(...)— paying full call overhead. - Inside
_recursive_set_args, hits the frozen-dc branch (_func_base.py:625+), computesplan, allocates/looks up the_qd_non_field_plansplural dict ons, computes_nf_plan = (), stores it, then hitsif not _nf_plan: return 0, True. - Second launch repeats the same dance — the kernel.py-level fast-skip still sees no
_qd_non_field_plan(singular), so it still does not fire. Every launch pays the cost of the call into_recursive_set_args, the dataclass-fields branch detection, the_get_frozen_dc_plan+_get_frozen_dc_unwrappedlookups, and the_qd_non_field_plansdict lookup before bottoming out at the inner early-return.
Impact
Correctness is preserved — the inner
if not _nf_plan: return 0, Trueearly-return inside_recursive_set_argsstill produces the right slot count (0). But the kernel.py change contributes nothing in the merged form; the PR description explicitly advertises this hop as "avoiding even function-call overhead" before_recursive_set_args, and that benefit is silently lost. The PR's own benchmark claim (eliminating the -11% regression on anymal_uniform_kinematic) was presumably measured against a version where the two attribute names matched. Why a simple rename is not enough
Renaming the kernel.py probe to read
_qd_non_field_plans(plural) would not work: that attribute is a dict keyed byid(plan), so it becomes truthy as soon as any plan entry is populated, andnot _nfpwould not select the all-Field empty-plan case. Two correct fixes:- Store an additional per-instance boolean fast-path attribute (e.g.
_qd_non_field_empty: bool) alongside the dict, so the launch loop can checkif getattr(val, "_qd_non_field_empty", False): continuein O(1) without per-launch dict logic. But this still needs to be keyed byplan_id(a different specialization may not be empty), so really this would have to be a set ofplan_ids or a dict mappingplan_id -> bool. - Look up the dict by the active
plan_idhere inlaunch_kernel— butplan_idis computed inside_recursive_set_argsfrom aplanthat itself depends onused_py_dataclass_parameters(keyed byself.used_py_dataclass_parameters_by_key_enforcing[key]) andpy_dataclass_basename. Doing the lookup at the kernel.py level requires hoisting the_get_frozen_dc_plancall (or its memoized result) out, which partially defeats the point of skipping the function call.
The cleanest path is to attach the empty-flag to the entry stored in the module-level
_frozen_dc_plansdict itself (which is already correctly keyed by specialization) and have kernel.py look that up — or simply remove the kernel.py fast-skip and accept the slightly higher function-call cost, since the inner early-return already preserves correctness. - Launch kernel for the first time with struct

Preserve argument validation before all-field fast-path
This early continue runs before _recursive_set_args, so any object carrying _qd_all_field=True (which is now cached on valid all-Field structs) bypasses all runtime type checks and argument emission for the current parameter. If such an object is accidentally passed to a non-struct parameter (for example, due to argument ordering mistakes), previous code raised QuadrantsRuntimeTypeError, but this change silently leaves the launch-context slot unset and can produce incorrect kernel execution instead of a clear error.

Cache a _qd_all_field boolean on frozen dataclass instances indicating whether all unwrapped field values are Fields (isinstance check against quadrants.lang.field.Field). This is a property of the instance alone — independent of which kernel or field-subset is active — so it survives qd.reset() harmlessly. In kernel.py, skip _recursive_set_args entirely for args where _qd_all_field is True, eliminating even function-call overhead. On the anymal_uniform_kinematic benchmark (field backend), this eliminates a -11% regression caused by struct-class annotations replacing qd.template() in kernel signatures. Preserve dataclass type validation before skipping args
This shortcut skips _recursive_set_args() solely when val._qd_all_field is true and the annotation is a dataclass, but _recursive_set_args() is where the strict provided_arg_type is needed_arg_type check lives. As a result, once an instance has _qd_all_field=True, passing it to a kernel parameter annotated with a different all-Field dataclass type can be silently accepted instead of raising the previous runtime type error, which weakens API/type safety and can route the wrong struct type through launch.

The per-file 3-way merge appended both copies into amdgpu_driver_functions.inc.h, producing redeclaration errors that broke the AMDGPU RHI/runtime compile. Drop the upstream duplicate block; the signatures are identical to the fork's existing declarations. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * Fix AMDGPU launcher coherence and num_instructions visibility after v1.0.0 merge - kernel_launcher.cpp: the 3-way merge spliced upstream v1.0.0's launch_llvm_kernel rewrite (ephemeral arg/context buffers, explicit-stream path, AmdgpuDefaultStream PinGuard) onto the AMD fork's kernarg-by-value + persistent-scratch design, leaving references to undefined `ephemeral_context_ptr`. Restore the fork's coherent launch_llvm_kernel verbatim; it calls the (already merged) enhanced launch_offloaded_tasks, which keeps the max-reducer dispatch and stream-parallel groups adapted onto the AMD launch path. - llvm_context.h: both the fork and upstream added `num_instructions`; the merge kept upstream's private placement, but the AMDGPU codegen force-inline heuristic calls it statically from outside the class. Move it back to the public section. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * Restore async result D2H and hoist kernarg vectors in AMDGPU launcher The v1.0.0 merge resolution regressed two amd-integration baseline optimizations in launch_llvm_kernel / launch_offloaded_tasks: - The per-launch result-buffer copy was a blocking memcpy_device_to_host, forcing a host stall on every value-returning launch and serializing the GPU pipeline. Restore the async D2H (the caller synchronizes lazily when it needs the value); external-array transfers still stream_synchronize once before reading back. - launch_task constructed the kernarg std::vectors from initializer lists ({kernarg_payload} / {kernarg_size}) on every dispatch (heap alloc + free per launch). Hoist arg_ptrs/arg_sizes out of the per-task launch and reuse. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * amdgpu: default to LDS permlane64 emulation; drop host-x86 barrier asm on retarget Two AMDGPU JIT-compile crashes surfaced after the v1.0.0 merge pulled in the QIPC subgroup ops (Genesis-Embodied-AI#676), which made the rigid constraint solver's wave-cooperative reductions route through `amdgpu_cross_half_shuffle_i32`. Both manifested as a SIGSEGV inside `llvm::SIInstrInfo::getInstSizeInBytes` during `JITSessionAMDGPU::compile_module_to_hsaco` (i.e. at first kernel launch), and reproduce on gfx942 / MI300X. Baseline 0.4.6 never emitted these constructs, which is why it was unaffected. 1. Native `llvm.amdgcn.permlane64` lowering crashes the bundled LLVM 22.1.0 AMDGPU backend. Default `amdgpu_permlane64` to the existing LDS-roundtrip software emulation on every target (it produces identical results). Add `QD_AMDGPU_USE_NATIVE_PERMLANE64=1` to opt back into the native instruction once the backend bug is fixed; the old `QD_AMDGPU_FORCE_PERMLANE64_FALLBACK` is now the default and still honored. This is the actual crash fix. 2. The runtime module is compiled by the host x86_64 clang and only retargeted to amdgcn here, so `amdgpu_cross_half_shuffle_i32`'s `__asm__ volatile("" : "+v"(byte))` optimization barrier carries x86 flag clobbers (`~{dirflag},~{fpsr},~{flags}`) that are meaningless on AMDGPU. The IR verifies but the empty-body INLINEASM is invalid on the amdgcn target. Neutralize empty-body barrier asm during retarget (forward the tied value, then erase) so no stale host asm reaches codegen. On the wave64 targets we ship `ds_bpermute` already addresses the full wave, so the hint is a no-op. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * style: apply clang-format (v19.1.7) to AMDGPU fn_attrs and launcher sources CI pre-commit's clang-format hook reformatted these files (long declarations/lambda signatures collapsed onto single lines per the repo's clang-format config). Apply the same formatting so the hook passes. No functional changes. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * fix(amdgpu): use CreateNeg for branchless i32 sgn instead of CreateSub(0, input) clang-tidy (modernize-use-nullptr, -warnings-as-errors) flagged `builder->CreateSub(0, input)` in the i32 sgn path: the literal `0` binds to the `llvm::Value*` LHS parameter as a null pointer, not an integer zero. Replace with `builder->CreateNeg(input)`, which emits `0 - input` with a proper zero constant -- identical intended semantics, and clang-tidy clean. When a frozen dataclass struct has only qd.Field entries (no Ndarrays, no templates that consume launch-context slots), the entire struct contributes zero arguments to the kernel launch context.
Two changes eliminate the per-launch overhead for these structs:
_func_base.py: After computing the field plan, identify which entries are "non-field" (consume slots). Cache as _qd_non_field_plan on the struct instance. If empty, return (0, True) without recursion.
kernel.py: Before calling _recursive_set_args, check for a cached empty _qd_non_field_plan. If present, skip the call entirely, avoiding even function-call overhead.
On the anymal_uniform_kinematic benchmark (two robots, random control each step, field backend), this eliminates a -11% regression caused by struct-class annotations replacing qd.template() in kernel signatures.
