Elsevier: numbered sections / figures in text / referencing figures and captions

sorry for three more basic questions:

1. my Elsevier journal asks for section numbering, excluding the abstract and the reference section. Is that possible?

2. Tables are displayed in text in the resulting pdf, while figures are listed in the end on separate pages in the end of the manuscript. Can I change the behavior so that figures are displayed within the text?

3. is there a more elegant way to reference figures and captions then using this approach http://stackoverflow.com/a/38861796

As for 1., I discovered the way to do this;
in the output statement, use

output: 
  rticles::elsevier_article:
    number_sections: yes

For 3, you can see my answer on StackOverflow, or https://bookdown.org/yihui/bookdown/a-single-document.html. Specifically, you can specify any LaTeX-based output format as the base format of bookdown::pdf_document2, e. g.

    base_format: rticles::elsevier_article
    number_sections: yes

Given https://github.com/rstudio/bookdown/blob/master/inst/examples/03-formats.Rmd#L381, this may be a bit out of date and you'd want:

output:
  bookdown::pdf_book:
    base_format: rticles::elsevier_article
    number_sections: yes

and with pdf_document2 I was getting

Error in pdf_book(..., base_format = rmarkdown::pdf_document) : 
  formal argument "base_format" matched by multiple actual arguments
Calls: <Anonymous> -> create_output_format -> do.call -> <Anonymous>
Execution halted

I am trying to delete the number_section on rticles::springer_article, without any luck.
Is there a way I could change the template (within the rticles package/library folder) to include that funcionality?

I added this to springer_article/resources/template.tex

Thanks, but it was rather the other way around: I was keen to delete the numbering. Whether, adding "number_sections: yes/no" had no different effect. The solution was simply adding the code from Elsevier which allowed that functionality to work.
