Clarification of documentation referring to installing from source for development purposes

The current documentation is perhaps unclear to some users on how to install it for development purposes (as opposed to installing from downloaded `pip` packages).

As discussed, the addition of "install from source" or similar in the documentation might help some users. Also links to documentation on `pip -e` and `setuptools`'s "development mode" could be of help too.
