These fix test_graph on python 3.

Unfortunately we don't have a clean way to prove this yet (in the sense of making it obvious there is no regression, since travis fails overall)... but it passes locally.

Edit: maybe adding a "passed so far' 3.4 travis build would be a good idea.

There's quite a few flaky tests, some functions return utf8/ascii depending on input - which changes regularly over time. Perhaps commits fixing these should be labelled "FLAKY" (I had previously munged around a couple of them with encode.utf-8 before printing, which was silly in retrospect).
