This receiver allows to receiver telemetry data expressed in YANG (Yet Another Next Generation) format, over gRPC.

This type of data is expressed by a variety of technologies, notably network appliances.

The receiver is able to interpret YANG data and convert it into OpenTelemetry metrics.

Example configuration for the component

yanggrpc:
  endpoint: localhost:54000

I've developed a production-ready YANG gRPC receiver that aligns well with the requirements described in this issue. I'd like to share the implementation and explore contributing it to the OpenTelemetry ecosystem.

Implementation Overview

The receiver provides generic YANG gRPC support with initial focus on Cisco IOS XE telemetry:

• RFC 6020/7950 compliant YANG parser with semantic type detection
• TLS/mTLS security implementation with configurable authentication
• Bidirectional gRPC streaming with kvGPB decoding support
• High-performance processing capable of handling 1000+ messages per second

Quality and Testing

I've focused heavily on code quality and comprehensive testing:

• 80%+ test coverage across 80+ test cases
• All standard Go quality checks pass (go vet, gofmt, go mod verify)
• Fast test execution with full suite completing in under 1 second
• Zero external dependencies in tests through comprehensive mocking
• Production deployment ready with extensive documentation

Architecture

The implementation follows OpenTelemetry component patterns:

• Standard Factory, Config, and Receiver structure
• Intelligent metric type detection using YANG schema analysis
• Configurable security controls including rate limiting and IP allowlisting
• Comprehensive error handling with graceful degradation
• Built-in observability metrics for monitoring receiver performance
