i think this is only on main, just listing this for visibility while i work on a fix

the issue is that, especially on first opening neo-tree, you'll usually see gitignored files

observe issue

Expected Behavior

gitignored files should, at most, be temporarily shown before being hidden by neo-tree.

It is. A quick bisect shows commit 144a979 introduced the bug.
