issue tracker hygiene makes it hard for new contributors to find available work #16692

Question

Many issues appear open and unassigned but already have PRs merged for them. For example:

Even the good first issue label is misleading. Every one of the 13 labeled issues has an active PR or someone already working on it in the comments.

This makes it hard to find available work as a new contributor. You end up doing a lot of archaeology just to figure out what's actually open.

Given how hot this project is, is there appetite for improving this? A couple of options:

  • Enforce Fixes #xxx in PR descriptions via a GitHub Action so issues auto-close on merge
  • Add a bot that flags issues where a linked PR has been merged but the issue is still open

Happy to help set it up if so.
