Overview

Canonicalize OpenTelemetry destinations for duplicate detection while leaving exporter request URLs and public configuration unchanged.

  • I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.
  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Details

  • Compare structured destinations after existing bare OTLP/HTTP trace-path resolution.
  • Realize default HTTP and HTTPS ports, normalize repeated and trailing path slashes, and retain query ordering and values.
  • Canonicalize standardized localhost names, IPv4 127.0.0.0/8 forms, IPv4 shorthand, and IPv6 ::1 without DNS lookups.
  • Preserve transport and scheme distinctions, repeated projection support, parse-failure fallback behavior, and exporter routing.
  • Add validation and activation-time regression coverage and document endpoint equivalence rules.

Validation included the Rust, Python, Node.js, and Go suites; documentation and link checks; and uv run pre-commit run --all-files.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with canonicalize_opentelemetry_destination in crates/core/src/observability/plugin_component.rs, then review the table-driven collision cases in crates/core/tests/unit/observability/plugin_component_tests.rs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved OpenTelemetry endpoint collision detection by recognizing equivalent URL formats, including default ports, normalized paths, host casing, and loopback addresses.
    • Preserved meaningful differences such as schemes, ports, hosts, paths, query strings, and transport types.
    • Updated collision messages to display normalized destinations more clearly.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded observability configuration guidance with details about endpoint normalization and duplicate detection behavior.

Review Change Stack

Walkthrough

OpenTelemetry destination collision detection now uses canonical keys for supported HTTP(S) endpoints. Canonicalization normalizes hosts, ports, paths, and loopback aliases while preserving query strings and raw identity for unsupported endpoints. Tests and documentation cover the behavior.

Changes

OTLP collision detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Canonical destination keys
crates/core/src/observability/plugin_component.rs
Adds structured canonical keys and display values. HTTP(S) endpoints normalize schemes, hosts, ports, paths, and loopback aliases. Collision checks use canonical keys and diagnostics use formatted destinations.
Collision validation coverage
crates/core/tests/unit/observability/plugin_component_tests.rs
Tests equivalent and distinct destinations across paths, ports, schemes, queries, hosts, loopback aliases, and transports.
Endpoint behavior documentation
docs/configure-plugins/observability/configuration.mdx, docs/configure-plugins/observability/opentelemetry.mdx
Documents canonical comparison, endpoint construction order, loopback equivalence, path and port normalization, and query-string significance.

Learning: In NeMo-Relay’s OpenTelemetry/OpenInference observability projection docs under docs/configure-plugins/observability/, document the projected-attribute contract as follows: (1) emit scalar top-level `data`/`metadata` fields as typed dotted OTLP attributes (for example, `nemo_relay.start.metadata.tenant`); (2) keep nested objects/arrays as JSON strings at their top-level OTLP attribute (rather than expanding them into nested OTLP attributes); and (3) do not reference the legacy `*_json` payload attributes (e.g., `data_json`, `metadata_json`, `input_json`) because they were intentionally removed as a breaking change.

2478-2492: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Verify Non-Loopback Trailing-Dot Canonicalization.

Line 2479 strips a trailing dot into domain, but Line 2491 stores the original host for non-loopback URLs. Therefore, http://collector.example./v1/traces can retain a different key from http://collector.example/v1/traces.

Confirm the intended scope with a collision test for that pair. If generic trailing-dot hosts are in scope, build the key from the stripped host. If only .localhost aliases are in scope, correct the stated canonicalization contract.

The supplied library context specifies trailing-dot host normalization.
