Overview

Prevent one faulty Node event subscriber from aborting the host process, while preserving asynchronous delivery and adding Promise-aware flushing.

  • I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.
  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Details

  • Replace the fatal N-API subscriber callback path with a CalleeHandled adapter that isolates synchronous throws and rejected Promises.
  • Wait for subscriber Promise settlement during flushSubscribers(), without rejecting it for an isolated subscriber failure.
  • Record the named failure through stderr and getLastCallbackError().
  • Cover global, scope-local, and plugin-context subscribers with child-process crash regressions; document the Promise-returning callback contract.

Validation:

  • cargo check -p nemo-relay-node
  • cargo clippy -p nemo-relay-node --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • node --test --test-force-exit crates/node/tests/scope_tests.mjs (32 passing)
  • Node public-docstring check
  • Commit-time pre-commit checks

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with crates/node/src/callable.rs, which introduces the subscriber adapter and its completion/error handling. Then review the child-process regressions in crates/node/tests/scope_tests.mjs.

Related Issues: (use one of the action keywords Closes / Fixes / Resolves / Relates to)

  • Fixes RELAY-637

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Subscriber callbacks can now be asynchronous and return Promises.
    • flushSubscribers() waits for asynchronous callbacks to complete.
    • Callback failures are isolated, reported to stderr, and available through getLastCallbackError().
    • Healthy subscribers continue receiving events when another subscriber throws or rejects.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for synchronous and asynchronous subscriber failures across global, scoped, and plugin registrations.
  • Documentation

    • Updated guidance for asynchronous subscribers and error handling.

106-108: Format Promise and stderr as code elements.

Use inline code formatting for these JavaScript and runtime API terms, consistent with flushSubscribers() and getLastCallbackError().

Walkthrough

Subscriber registration now supports synchronous and asynchronous JavaScript callbacks. Callback failures are isolated, reported through the callback-error channel, and excluded from flushSubscribers() rejection. Tests cover global, scope-local, and plugin registrations.

Changes

Asynchronous subscriber handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subscriber registration contracts
crates/node/plugin.d.ts, crates/node/README.md, crates/node/src/api/mod.rs
Public contracts and registration APIs now support callbacks returning void or Promise<void> for global, scope-local, and plugin subscribers.
Tracked callback dispatch
crates/node/src/callable.rs
The subscriber wrapper invokes synchronous or promise-returning callbacks, records errors, and signals completion once after callback, serialization, or queueing failures.
Failure-isolation validation
crates/node/tests/scope_tests.mjs
Subprocess tests cover synchronous throws and rejected promises for global, scope-local, and plugin subscribers. Healthy subscribers continue to receive events, and flushSubscribers() waits for fulfilled promises.

register_subscriber and scope_register_subscriber with the N-API TypeScript
argument annotation "(event: Json) => void | Promise<void>". Align their Rust
documentation with PluginContext.registerSubscriber while preserving the
existing registration behavior.

In `@crates/node/src/callable.rs`:
- Around line 1236-1247: Update crates/node/src/callable.rs lines 1236-1247 and
1280-1285 so both callback paths record errors before calling
complete_js_subscriber_callback, ensuring flush waiters observe the error. In
the first path, ensure callback tracking completes even when
ctx.get::<String>(0) fails; preserve the existing successful message-recording
behavior, then complete the callback in all cases.
- Around line 1223-1228: Update the ThreadSafeFunction creation in the callback
setup around JsSubscriberCallbackCall to use a finite max_queue_size instead of
0. Preserve the existing NonBlocking dispatch and non-Status::Ok error-handling
path so rejected calls continue recording the error and releasing their callback
IDs.
- Around line 1205-1212: Update the subscriber wrapper created in the callable
callback so unsettled promises are bounded by a timeout: ensure the completion
path reports a timeout error and releases the flush barrier when fn(event) does
not settle within the established limit. Preserve normal
complete(messageFor(error)) behavior for settled promises, and coordinate this
with flush_js_subscriber_callbacks() so the blocking wait cannot remain occupied
indefinitely.

In `@crates/node/tests/scope_tests.mjs`:
- Around line 454-479: Add a success-path test in the subscriber test suite that
registers a promise-returning subscriber, awaits a deferred task before setting
a flag, then awaits flushSubscribers() and asserts the flag is set. Use the
existing subscriber registration and deferred-task helpers, preserving the
failure-isolation tests while verifying flushSubscribers waits for subscriber
promise completion.
- Around line 90-95: Update the execFileSync invocation in the scope test to
catch child-process failures and include the thrown error’s stderr in the
reported assertion or failure message. Preserve the existing stdout capture and
subscriber failure assertion while ensuring child assertion details surface
instead of only the generic exit status.

Learning: In NVIDIA/NeMo-Flow, TypeScript source files should use `//` line comments for SPDX headers (e.g., `// SPDX-FileCopyrightText: ...` and `// SPDX-License-Identifier: ...`) rather than C-style block comments (`/* ... */`).
