Select components sluggish when sending form

Hi,

I have two select boxes (one customized) with more than 100 items each within a form. When the form is sent per press of a button, the whole page reloads to present the results below the form as a table. The problem is that the query results can be quite big and slow to load and when the page is in the state of executing the query, the two select boxes appear as big rectangular boxes with no css applied to them.

Is there a way to improve the situation? Can be query execution (sqlite) and page rendering be done in separate processed/threads? Any help would be appreciated!
