Rethinking everyday decisions with SimDec

Can simulation tools help you decide whether to buy an electric car, choose where to live, or reach your savings goals?

In this chapter, the authors show how Simulation Decomposition (SimDec)—a method usually used in business and engineering—can also support everyday personal decisions.
From finances to fitness, SimDec helps individuals make data-driven decisions under uncertainty, by revealing what really drives outcomes and what trade-offs are involved.

What kinds of decisions are covered?

The chapter walks through six real-life cases where SimDec was applied to personal choices:

Situation Decision Goal
Saving money How much and how long should I save each month?
Choosing a country Which country is best for me to live in?
Taking a mortgage Should I choose an interest rate cap?
Learning a language How much effort is enough to reach B2?
Buying a car Which vehicle aligns with my values and budget?
Fitness goals Can I reduce fat % by gaining muscle mass?

Each model is simple and built in Excel, but the use of SimDec allows the user to explore different scenarios, compare outcomes, and see which factors influence results the most.

Highlights from the cases

  • 💰 Savings: Small monthly contributions add up—time horizon matters more than how much you save each month.
  • 🌍 Country choice: Quantifying personal values and uncertainties helped the decision-maker realize that her top-ranked country wasn’t her initial favorite.
  • 🏡 Mortgage: SimDec showed how an interest rate cap reduces financial risk with minimal downside.
  • 🧠 Language learning: Only high-intensity study schedules made it realistic to reach B2 proficiency in one year.
  • 🚗 Car purchase: Despite environmental goals, the second-hand hybrid offered the best trade-off between emissions and cost.
  • ⚖️ Fat percentage: Gaining muscle alone doesn’t significantly reduce fat %. SimDec clarified that dietary changes are essential for visible results.

Why use SimDec for personal decisions?

Most people rely on gut feeling or simple comparisons when facing uncertainty.
SimDec introduces a visual, scenario-based approach that makes it easier to:

  • Understand how different factors interact
  • Identify unrealistic expectations
  • Explore what-if scenarios
  • Communicate decisions clearly to others
  • Adjust plans as conditions change

Whether you’re planning finances, moving countries, or choosing a new lifestyle, SimDec offers a simple but powerful way to see what drives your outcomes.

Who is this for?

This chapter is for:

  • Individuals who want to make better personal decisions
  • Educators teaching decision science or modeling
  • Analysts looking to explain models in human terms
  • Anyone curious about applying simulation to real life

You don’t need to be a technical expert to start—just curiosity and a spreadsheet.
